DESIGN ELEMENT
SHAPE

SHAPE is an area enclosed by a line on a flat surface

SHAPE is two-dimensional, consisting only of height and width, but not of depth

If depth is added to a shape it becomes a 'form'
You will see some confusion about this as the terms 'shape' and 'form' are often wrongly used interchangeably

Shapes are either organic or geometrical

ORGANIC SHAPE
A shape with an irregular contour, like shapes that appear in nature

GEOMETRIC SHAPE
A shape with a regular contour, such as a square, triangle, or circle

Shapes can also be seen as being positive or negative
This relates to the Design Principle of 'FIGURE-GROUND'
