| Student: Narcissa Year Level: 7 School: Heatherhill Secondary College Teacher: Sue McDonnell Activity: Letterform - visually communicating an idea or message Task Description (provided by Sue - thanks) 1 Teacher introduces the concept of exaggerating or modifying the shapes of letters in order to visually communicate an idea or message. A good example of this, that is around at the moment is the title of a new childrens animation movie called ROBOTS 2 Class brainstorms a large list of words (nouns and adverbs) that would lend themselves to the task. Eg. Squash, stretch, melt, Dragon, Dinosaur, Aliens, Angel, Devil, Playground, Amusement Park, hairy, Shatter, Break Dance, Hip Hop. 3 Discuss the characteristics of some of these examples that could be developed as visual clues to make the meaning of the word clear. Eg.Wings, clouds, halo's applied to letter shapes to explain the characteristics of an Angel. Swings, ladders and climbing ropes hanging from or connecting the letters of 'Playground' 4 Students were asked to trial 6 different ideas. 5 Select the best one and apply Design Elements to further enhance the visual communication 6 Final presentation was drawn up on a new sheet of cartridge paper, selecting and applying media that best represented the surface textures of the object. Coloured pencil and black fineliner were used for the 'Punk' example. Student used a pattern of criss- cross pencil patches, developed to suggest denim material and metallic pens for the chains and safety pins. Students were also encouraged to consider appropriate choice of colour and style of backing for final presentation that might further reinforce the meaning of the word. Hence the black, angular cut out shapes placed behind the word Punk. Periods Allocated: One double for the intro and exploration of 6 ideas. A single period for application of media and design elements to trials. Another double to complete final presentation. |
