DESIGN PRINCIPLES
WHITESPACE/WHITE SPACE

Whitespace is nothing. Whitespace is the absence of content. Whitespace does not hold content in the way that a photograph or text holds meaning and yet it gives meaning, through context, to both image and text. In fact, whitespace can make or break the effective transmission of image and text.

VIGNELLI CANON
Massimo Vignelli (born 1931 in Milan, Italy) is a designer who has done work in a number of areas ranging from package design to furniture design to public signage to showroom design through Vignelli Associates, which he co-founded with his wife, Lella. He has said, "If you can design one thing, you can design everything."

In January 2009, Vignelli released
The Vignelli Canon as a free e-book. In the introduction Vignelli writes, "I thought that it might be useful to pass some of my professional knowledge around, with the hope of improving [young designers'] design skills. Creativity needs the support of knowledge to be able to perform at its best."

UPDATE
DEVELOPING YOUR CREATIVITY USING A SKETCHBOOK

In 2008, new web pages were added to this website about VISUAL DIARY. On one of these web pages there was information about and a link to "the best information" I could find at that stage. It is still very relevant but the link ceased to exist some time ago. I have found the PDF Document again, and you can see it and download it if you .................

ORTHO
PDF DOCUMENTS + WEB PAGES

There are a number of PDF Documents and Web pages to be found on the Internet which explain ORTHOGONAL / ORTHOGRAPHIC DRAWING (PROJECTION).

YOU MAY FIND ONLY ONE PAGE USEFUL, OR ONE DRAWING, OR ONE SECTION, OR A WHOLE DOCUMENT. You may have to do some editing and/or cut-and-pasting, but if it helps you to help your students learn and understand something, it is worthwhile.

WORD SHAPES + WORD CLOUDS
A shape can be formed by the word or words within the shape. Word clouds are fun ways to visualise the prevalence of different words in a body of text.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT BACKGROUNDS
Coloured, textured and photographic backgrounds are well worth considering, but you have to think differently about how to make the important information stand out when it is not the usual white background
