Ken CATO
JUNE 2013
Ken Cato, Founder and global head of brand company Cato Partners, has been
recognised as an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for services to the graphic
design profession as a practitioner, and through education and development
roles both nationally and internationally.

If you can picture in your mind's eye the corporate trade-marks for Common
wealth Bank, Seven Network, biscuit company Arnott's, or Coles supermarkets,
then Ken Cato has done his job.

One of Ken Cato’s passions is the Design Foundation, which he established two
decades ago as a not-for-profit organisation.  The Design Foundation is
dedicated to encouraging excellence in design by supporting, promoting and
enhancing the professional development of young designers. Since 1991, the
Design Foundation has organised and presented
agIdeas International Design
Week, which has grown to become one of the largest and most prestigious
creative events in the world.

PRODUCT SKETCHES

DESIGN DRAWING
When you enter a design studio you will find out that drawing by hand is an
integral part of the decision-making process, used in the early stages of design,
in brainstorm sessions, in the phase of researching and exploring concepts, and
in presentation. Drawing has proved to be a versatile and powerful tool for
exploring and for communicating.

DESIGN SKETCHES
Designers use sketches throughout the design process. In the different stages in
the design process the sketches are different. Sketches change in shape and
content during the design process, and sketches have different purposes.

PRESENTATION BOARD LAYOUT TIPS
One of the most crucial parts of the design process is the presentation and the
selling of your concept. You have worked on your design process for weeks now
and your presentation is where you get to showcase the best aspects/features of
your design.

LEFT AND RIGHT BRAIN
POSTERS
PAINT, MUSIC, PASSION
Their print campaign draws on
emotional ties between the left
and right brain. The beautiful
illustrated spreads show
creativity, free spirit and passion of
the right brain vs. the
familiar, accurate and linear. The
campaign is beautiful,
articulate and creative. The copy is
carefully crafted and works
with each illustration.

FINDING INFO
One of the main things I am always
doing is to select the best information I
can find for you and your students - and I
have the time to do it. For any particular
topic, that often means sifting through
many, many websites to find the best -
and then to find the best 1-2 pages within
each website. There are some websites
that provide a lot of links to other
websites that have already been selected
because they are good and have already
been categorised. The following website,
'ALLTOP', is an excellent example that I
use, and you may like to use it as well.

HOW DO YOU START THE
CREATIVE JUICES?
David LaFerriere starts his creative juices
before work by doing drawings on the
lunch bags of his children. David started
making these decorative lunch bags back
in May 2008. It all came about one
morning in an attempt to do something
special for his boys.

PROFILE PORTRAITS
Mike Mitchell’s portraits are definitely a
departure from the bulk of what he has
been doing.
The itch to do something a little more
ambitious and work-intensive was starting
to build.

"For this portrait series, I wanted to keep
the personalities there, at least how they
exist in my own mind. Then apply that to
a traditional portrait, something that most
of these characters wouldn’t be doing.
There’s an ironic sense about them that I
like, but I also just really love these dudes
for who they are, and I didn’t want to take
too much of that away. When I watch a
movie and really connect with a
character, I often feel a strong urge to
draw/paint that person."

FROM NEW ZEALAND
TOP SCHOLAR GRAPHICS 2011
If you haven't seen this yet, it is well
worth a look - particularly the PDF
Documents at the bottom of the page

Samuel Blok from Waiheke College took
the 2011 Top Scholar in Graphics with a
three-part project that included
- a transformable apartment design
- a matching piece of furniture
- a visual presentation

Teacher comment
"This really is outstanding work. Samuel
used a wide combination of tools
throughout the project including
traditional hand drawing and illustration
techniques and Photoshop, Google
SketchUp and V-Ray to a very high
standard. The environments he created
for the final solution looked very
realistic," teacher Linda McKelvie says.
"Sam was overwhelmed to get the top
mark because he always thought students
who achieved at that level were just
gifted, but he now realises that it also
takes a lot of hard work!"

VCE EXAM
2012 ASSESSMENT REPORT

The 2012 Visual Communication and
Design examination was completed by
5984 students.
It was the last
examination paper for the previous
study design and this point should be
taken into consideration when reading
the report in
preparation for future examinations
.

COMMENT: This is a very well presented
report - explanations and examples. I
hope the future reports are at least as
good as this.

BRINGING IDEAS TO LIFE
I HOPE YOU CAN SPARE 17 MINUTES
TO WATCH THIS VIDEO
Rilla Alexander defines the classic
creative struggle and how she deals with
it. The most insightful information she
shares is when she reminds people that
the things they think will take a day
actually take a week and without starting
somewhere there can be no end.
