DESIGN 21: Social Design Network
www.design21sdn.com
is where members of the design community, socially conscious individuals, local
governments, businesses and non-profit organizations (NPOs) can address social
concerns and create smart solutions through design. It's a place where like-minded
people can connect to share resources, inspire each other and take action.

In partnership with
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization), they seek to explore the relationship between design and society. They
believe that design should be more than an aesthetic exercise; that the real beauty
lies in its potential to improve the way that we live and interact in our communities
and our environment.

DESIGN 21: Social Design Network is guided by UNESCO's premise that
education, science and technology, and culture and communication are
tools by which to disseminate knowledge and information, build
awareness and foster dialogue

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2010 as the
International Year for the Rapprochement of
Cultures
and defined three main dimensions:
dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation.

UNESCO was entrusted with the mandate to build "the defences of peace
in the minds of men", and was designated as lead UN agency in
undertaking activities that focussed on:
•   Promoting reciprocal knowledge of cultural, ethnic,
    linguistic, and religious diversity
•   Building a framework for commonly shared values
•   Strengthening quality education and the building of
    intercultural competencies
•   Fostering dialogue for sustainable development.

Judging Criteria
In all of Design 21's competitions, the general judging criteria are:

•Overall effectiveness:
How well does the solution provide an answer to the design
problem?

•
Creativity:
How innovative or inventive is the thinking behind the design?

•
Practicality:
How successfully can the design be produced or put into
practice?

•
Aesthetics:
How strong is the design in terms of overall form and
presentation?

•
Ecology:
How well does the design respond to environmental concerns
through considerations such as choice of materials,
production techniques, life-span, recycle or re-use factors?

The degree of importance for each judging criteria is at the discretion
of the jury depending on the nature and scope of the competition.
There may also be additional, more specific judging criteria relating to
each competition.

The judges for this competition were also looking for the ability to
graphically and visually communicate the message of Rapprochement
of Cultures in a compelling and easy-to-understand way.

The following principles were important:
•How clearly does the design articulate principles of
universality and plurality?

•How well does the design promote a positive and diverse
notion of "rapprochement"?
