UNIT 3
Visual communication practices

OUTCOME 1
Visual communication design

Focus on the application of the design process to
satisfy a stated visual communication need

ASSESSMENT TASK
Apply the design process to produce
a final visual communication presentation
that satisfies a specified communication
need

        Assessment Support Material
This Assessment Support Material is provided by the
VCAA in addition to the 2005 VCE Visual
        Communication and Design Assessment Handbook
and should be used together with the handbook

You will need to demonstrate the ability to:

o   describe the communication need

o
research and analyse information relevant to
   the communication need

o
apply manual drawing including
   - freehand drawing
   - drawing from direct observation
   to
generate concepts and ideas relevant to
   the communication need

o
apply a range of
   - materials
   - media
   - design elements
   - design principles
   to
develop design alternatives appropriate to
   the communication need

o
produce orthogonal drawings observing
   Australian Standards conventions including
   - correct dimensioning
   - correct labelling techniques
   appropriate to the communication need

o
use drawing methods appropriate to
   the communication need to
demonstrate
   - form
   - function (where appropriate)
   including
   - third-angle orthogonal
   - paraline drawing
     - isometric
     - planometric
   - perspective drawing

o
apply
   - information and communications technology
   - where appropriate, other methods of
     electronic image generation such as
     - photography
     - photocopying
   appropriate to the communication need

o
select and develop design alternatives to
   suit the communication need

o
evaluate alternative designs to satisfy
   a defined communication need

o
refine a selected design to produce
a final presentation to suit the communication
   need

o
produce a final presentation to satisfy
   the stated communication need

You will need to demonstrate knowledge of

o   a communication need that defines the focus
   of a final presentation

o   the cyclical nature of the design process including
   - ongoing evaluation
   - the development of design alternatives

example

o   - information (e.g. digital information, information
     about freehand drawing)
   - media (e.g. pencil, dye)
   - material (e.g. paper, card)
relevant to the communication need during
   - the developmental work
   - the final presentation

o
design elements including
   - colour
   - line
   - tone
   - texture
   - form
   - shape
   - point
   - letterform
   in
   - developmental work
   - the final presentation

o
design principles including
   - figure-ground
   - balance
   - contrast
   - cropping
   - hierarchy
   - scale
   - proportion
   - pattern
   in
   - developmental work
   - the final presentation

o   manual
freehand drawing techniques including
   -
drawing from observation
to generate ideas and concepts relevant to
the communication need in developmental work

o   - two-dimensional manual drawing including
     - third-angle orthogonal
   - three-dimensional manual drawing including
     - paraline drawings
       - isometric
       - planometric
     - perspective drawings
   in
   - developmental work
   - final presentation (where appropriate)

o   - information and communications technology
     applications
   - other methods of electronic image generation
      such as
      - photography
      - photocopying
   in
   - developmental work
   - final presentation (where appropriate)

o   a final presentation that satisfies a specified need
